How to Become an Optimist: 3 Daily Habits To Help You Get Started

by   HENRIK EDBERG “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Winston Churchill “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” Maria Robinson “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Anais Nin One of the most common questions people ask me via email is  how to become more of an optimist . So this week I’d simply like to share three habits that can help you to get started with that. I use these myself just about every day to stay optimistic in pretty much any situation. It may sometimes take a while before I find an optimistic thread of thought but these three habits usually help me to do it. 1. Ask yourself questions that let you see the optimistic viewpoint. When I’m in what seems like a negative situation my most common way of making something better out of that is to ask myself questions that promote optimism and helps me t

Governor Nyesom Wike on Thursday called on Nigerian women to struggle for political power, instead of having it handed to them by men.  Nothing stops women from excelling in politics, he said.  According to him women should set up structures that would help them to achieve political mileage. “When it comes to power, you have to struggle for it. If you are prepared for politics, you must equip yourself,” the governor added. He spoke on Thursday during the Women’s Day event of the Rivers State Golden Jubilee celebration in Port Harcourt

It's finally here! After a long wait,  Miley Cyrus ' new single "Malibu" is here in all its glory. The song debuted on Zane Lowe 's Beats 1 radio show. Cyrus and  Diane   Martel  directed the video, which was also released Thursday. The former Disney darling has spoken about the inspiration behind the track, namely her fiancé Liam   Hemsworth , and why the two ultimately had to take a break. "I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you're like, 'I don't recognize you anymore.' We had to re-fall for each other," she said in a candid interview with  Billboard . Cyrus also shared that this   upcoming album   is entirely on her terms. "I know exactly where I am right now. I know what I want this record to be. And not in the sense of manipulation—wanting something from my fans or the audience, like some slimy thing—'How do I get attention?' I never tho

Antonio Conte: Chelsea squad will enjoy the pressure of Premier League title run-in

The Blues head to West Brom live on  Friday Night Football  knowing a win will make it impossible for second-placed Tottenham to catch them, and give Conte the league championship in his first year in English football, an achievement which has led to rumours linking him with a move to Inter. Centre-back Gary Cahill has   spoken of the confidence currently coursing through the squad   and Conte wants his players to enjoy playing in a "very hot" atmosphere at The Hawthorns. "This moment is a really good moment for us because we are so close to reaching a fantastic target," said Conte, who has two years left on his contract at Chelsea. "We must not forget that we have to take three points in these three games. Tomorrow we have the first chance, the first opportunity to take three points. "Also, we must know to play against West Brom is not easy. They are a strong team, really physical with a good coach. For sure, the atmosphere will be very hot.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic can 'play for many years', says his surgeon

The surgeon who operated on Manchester United forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic says the veteran forward is in "superb shape" and can play on for many years if he wishes. Ibrahimovic underwent surgery in the United States last week aftersuffering major knee ligament damage during a Europa League tie against Anderlecht. Ibrahimovic faces a long period of rehabilitation and, with his United contract due to expire at the end of the season, his future at the club is in doubt. But Dr Freddie Fu told the  South China Morning Post  he is convinced that Ibrahimovic should be able to continue playing at the top level. Fu, who is chairman of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, has carried out over 20,000 knee operations. And he operated on Ibrahimovic alongside colleague Volker Musahl. Fu said: "I can't discuss too many details, I don't want to get in trouble with Manchester United. "But I can tell you he

The Kate Middleton Effect: 6 Years After They Tied the Knot, How Prince William's Wife Has Transformed the Royal Family Forever

Little could we have known when 28-year-old  Prince William  proposed to an ordinary girl from Berkshire, his future bride would be responsible for changing the royal family forever. It's been almost seven years since that day and in that time there has been a revolutionary shift in the way the House of Windsor does business. Traditional pomp and circumstance still abound, of course, but alongside it, with equal importance, there is now an unprecedented amount of soul bearing and emotional confessionals—the  kind of thing the royal family has always publicly shied away from. And there is no doubt that Kate is at the root of this fundamental change. The evidence was especially clear a few weeks ago when William and Harry admitted during a candid video shoot the real inspiration behind the launch of their most ambitious project yet, the mental health charity Heads Together. "It was your idea, I think," William said, nodding to Kate, as the camera rolled. &quo

The Dangerous Politics Of Buhari’s Health By Azu Ishiekwene

I don’t know if protocol will permit it. But it would not be a bad idea for British Prime Minister Theresa May to visit President Muhammadu Buhari at the London hospital where the Nigerian president is being treated. She has a story to share. Three years before May unexpectedly became prime minister, she got a surprise. Theresa May was not feeling well and after weeks of assuming it may well be part of the misery of politics, she decided to do a medical test. She was misdiagnosed at first, with the result showing that she had Type 2 diabetes. It wasn’t Type 2 diabetes, but the result of the second test was even more difficult to believe: she had Type 1 diabetes. She received the news with shock, doubt and confusion. Why was it difficult to believe? Type 1 diabetes, also described as “juvenile diabetes,” is common among much younger people (some say 40 and below), especially children. She was 57 and thought it improbable that she would have a medical condition associated with j

N1.5b Scam: Appeal Court Overturns Former NIMASA Director's Conviction

A court of Appeal sitting in Lagos on Thursday discharged and acquitted Raymond Omatseye , the former Director- General (D-G), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), convicted of awarding contracts above his threshold. Omatseye was on May 20, 2016 convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of a Federal High Court in Lagos over a N1.5 billion-contract scam. Ofili-Ajumogobia ruled then that Omatseye had awarded contracts worth N2.5 million above his stipulated threshold, and accordingly, convicted him in 24 out of 27-count charge. Omatseye was sued by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The ex-NIMASA boss, however, through his lawyer, Mr Edoka Onyeke, went on appeal. On his grounds of appeal, his lawyer argued that Omatseye was persecuted and not prosecuted, stressing that contract splitting though existing in the law, the approval above threshold does not exist. He also argued that the judge th
